Name: Weston from the Anglo Saxon for 'western homestead', Turville from the Turville family who were Lords of the Manor during the reign of King John in the 13th century.

Weston Turville History: An Anglo-Saxon settlement when the Normans invaded in the 11th century, Weston Turville was listed as 'Westone' in the Domesday Book (1086), its proximity to Akeman Street, a major Roman road, would have meant that the Romans were aware of the settlement and a Roman amphora and other relics found in the rectory garden give evidence of their presence. Over the centuries the village developed as five distinct areas (called 'ends'), Brook End, Church End, South End, World's End and West End.

The parish church of St Mary was first built during the 12th century, though little of the original construction remains, you can still see the font and an octagonal shaft in the south wall of the chancel, the chancel arch and 3 eastern bays of the south arcade date from the thirteenth century.

St Mary the Virgin Church Weston TurvilleOver the centuries the village was mostly involved in agriculture, though other industries included duck breeding and straw plaiting, Weston Turville was one of the main centres for the breeding of Aylesbury Ducks during the 19th century.

The English scholar John Colet (at one time Dean of St Paul's Cathedral) lived in the village during the 16th century. The parish of Weston Turville was inclosed in 1798 by an act of parliament.

Weston Turville Reservoir: The reservoir at Weston Turville (often referred to as Halton Reservoir), was built to supply water for the Grand Union Canal (Wendover Arm) in 1795, it is owned by British Waterways. It is an important habitat for many species of water birds including Water Rail, Grey Heron and Shoveler, plant species include Yellow Iris, Reedmace, Willow and Common Reed. The reedbeds provided are something of a rarity in modern Britain. The reservoir became a site of Special Scientific Interest in 1986. A small bird reserve which was established at the reservoir by BBONT (Bucks, Beds and Oxford Nature Trust).
